Teenagers find it awkward when an adult asks them to smile. In a self-portrait studio the remote is theirs: they choose the poses, the looks and which frames to keep. The result looks like them rather than like a school album photo.

Yes — even studio lighting and a neutral backdrop are exactly what admissions panels ask for.
